Israeli Ultraviolet Space Telescope ULTRASAT to Launch in Partnership with NASA in 2026

The Israeli Ultraviolet Space Telescope, ULTRASAT, is set to be launched by the American space agency NASA in 2026. Developed by the Weizmann Institute of Science in collaboration with the Israeli Space Agency, ULTRASAT aims to revolutionize our ability to detect and analyze transient events in the universe, such as stellar mergers and explosions.

Under the agreement between the Israeli Space Agency and NASA, NASA will join as a partner in the project and provide the launch for all its components. As part of the partnership, NASA will also have access to the scientific observations data conducted by the accompanying telescope.

Following its launch, ULTRASAT will orbit Earth in a high-altitude path, allowing for continuous communication with a ground station in Israel. Its access to a large volume of space will enable it to detect transient events with a sensitivity 100 times greater than existing star observers. Additionally, ULTRASAT will measure ultraviolet light emissions, providing crucial insights into various astronomical phenomena.

Dr. Mark Clampin, Head of the Astrophysics Division at NASA, expressed pride in their participation, emphasizing ULTRASAT's significant contribution to international efforts in space exploration. This collaboration has attracted leading international organizations such as NASA and DESY, who invest substantial resources in the project in exchange for active participation and access to scientific outcomes.
